Purpose at Work

Writer: Jamison WestJamison West

My Teamatics Co-Founder and I have been working on a presentation for the HR Virtual Summit, and I found it interesting that an extreme focus on preparation for a singular event could create so much creativity and clarity. We are working very hard to define Performance Development as a vastly more positive and effective alternative to Performance Management. What we found was fairly impactful, and really rounded out our messaging.

What is Purpose in the Workplace?

Purpose is an aspirational reason for being which inspires and provides a call to action. When we add "At Work" to the phrase, we narrow down the focus to how an organization can help it's people find purpose in the workplace. This comes about in 2 ways:

  1. Alignment to Organizational Direction. When we give an employee absolutely clarity on where an organization is going, how it is going to get there, how it will behave along the way, and most importantly why it is going in the first place, they are able to buy in to the journey. This helps people perform most any task at the organization and understand how they are contributing to the journey. There is purpose in alignment to organizational direction.

  2. Personal Growth. When along that journey we are able to show what it looks like to be great in any job, what jobs are available, and how they might connect together in a variety of career paths we can show an individual how they might grow in alignment with their strengths, interests and passions.

How do you deliver?

Whatever the size of your organization, ensure you have absolute clarity on your Vision, Plan, Values, and Mission. In other words, where you are going, how you will get there, how you will behave along the way and why you are going. Make sure they tie together into a clear story that you share with not only your current team, but with new job candidates as well so they can make an informed decision as to whether this is a journey they want to take. Then be clear as to what it looks like to be successful in each job and how people might progress and grow within your organization. If they can align their strengths, interests and passions to those opportunities they will find even more purpose in their work.
